We are developing a specialty service for colleges here at Practical Neuropsychiatry!

Why? Simple. College is the ultimate transition point. Because of the natural changes in the human body, the ages 17-25 are the most common times to develop psychotic symptoms, major mood disorders, autoimmune conditions, and other issues that often become more complex than they originally seemed.

Sure the first depression episode or first psychotic episode can be easily treated with the standard medical model with primary care and psychiatry, but what about the first sudden catatonic episode where Encephalitis and other medical emergencies are also most common at this age?

Common complaints like Fatigue, dizziness, migraine, and seizure are often best evaluated in a primary care setting and with a referral with general neurology, but what do you do when the initial tests come back normal?

Practical neuropsychiatry is here to offer another model of care for patients when the primary medical model is unable to find or quickly treat the diagnosis. With our medical group appointments designed to treat syndromes like Long COVID, Migraine, Medically Unexplained Symptoms, and others, your students can have access to frequent appointments (every other week) for rapid medication adjustments, extensive education about their conditions, and support from others experiencing similar struggles. Speed is of utmost importance for a college student on track to have a successful career if a diagnosis is made and treated quickly.

It is very important to understand, we do not replace the standard medical model in any way. Most patients may still need a trip to the ER and regular outpatient follow up with either a neurologist or psychiatrist after completing our course. We are focusing on patients that have tried seeking help in the standard model, maybe twice, maybe more, and they and their families are considering giving up and bringing their child home.

Read more about our Shared Medical Appointments Here, scan through our common conditions page, and look at our articles to understand the types of patients that most benefit from our services. Share them with your providers, give us feedback for any content that might help your students, and share them with families. All we ask is that when families are in crisis, considering giving up, on track to lose their money and derail their child’s future, you keep us in mind as a possible option to 1. help fully understand the diagnosis, 2. understand the most up to date science, 3. know who in the standard medical model will most likely help, and 4. know all of the treatments available. When appropriate we will send them back to their community providers with us as a back up if things get too complex, and in some cases we will continue to provide ongoing services. It will be up to the student and their families. Contact us with the below form, or direct patients and families to our contact page if they are ready for a consult.
